training and a practical exercise regarding the treatment of an oil spill

In the framework of World Environment Day, the intermunicipal Port Fund of Lesvos carried out with the anti-pollution team set up for emergency response theoretical training and a practical exercise regarding the treatment of an oil spill in the port of Mytilene.

An effort launched in 2010. The Lesvos branch of the Hellenic Rescue Team has been actively participating in the Pollution Response team of the Intermunicipal Port Fund of Lesvos for 11 years, has participated in all theoretical and practical trainings with the company “METOPI” and Mr. Michalis Angelopoulos, as well as with other associates that make up the team, such as the Mytilene Commandos Club, the Aegean University, fishermen and others under the coordination of the Central Port Authority of Mytilene dealing with oil pollution emergencies.

This year the Lesvos branch participated with a total of 13 people, while a total of about 50 members have been trained all these years. With special emphasis on the observance of the measures for the prevention of the spread of the Coronavirus, the annual training was carried outdoors with all the anticipated protection measures.

On Sunday, June 6, the volunteers who make up the Oil Spill Response Team were first informed about the means at its disposal and then carried out its annual training in the central port of Mytilene by deploying a pollution barrier to contain a supposedly large oil spill resulting from a ship leaking crude oil. The port fund has been provided with modern equipment to deal with such a situation and on the day the new oil collection system (Skimmer) was presented and used, Now available to teams that may be called upon to deal with such a situation.

The Intermunicipal Port Fund of Lesvos has Oil Spill Response facilities in the ports of Petra, Sigri, Mytilene and Perama and every year the exercise is repeated in a different port. We thank all those involved for the excellent cooperation and training they provide us.
