AIGIS 2 preparedness exercise

On Monday, October 19, 2020 09:00 to 12:00 hours , the Lesvos branch of the Hellenic Rescue Team participated in a preparedness exercise that took place in Mytilene, in the area of Kratigos.

The Preparedness exercise was carried out in the framework of the AIGIS operation with the full title “Development of a Cross-Border Integrated Innovative Intelligent System for Resource Management, Decision Making and Training in Dealing with Natural and Technological Disasters and Man-Made and Social Crises” (https://aegisproject.eu/) of the cooperation programme Interreg VA “Greece – Cyprus 2014-2020”.

The object of the program is natural disasters, social crises and the “Integrated Innovative Intelligent System for Resource Management, Decision Making and Training in Response to Natural and Technological Disasters and Man-Made and Social Crises” (acronym ESYLA), creation of which was one of the main objectives of the operation.

ESYLA is an innovative solution at the level of local and supra-local management of human and material resources, tools, protocols and infrastructure, which can be used for civil protection. The innovation in this new form of management lies in the geospatial dimension of the resources, which the system records and presents, as well as in the coding of the tools related to each type of destruction, which can be retrieved by the user with smart queries.

The model of electronic management of these resources is in line with the new trend of decentralization of civil protection services, as it strengthens these services at regional level and improves the management of relevant resources. At the same time, it strengthens cooperation and coordination, as all stakeholders gain a common point of reference. The beneficiaries of the program took part in the exercise

  • North Aegean Regional Development Fund – Main Beneficiary
  • National and Kapodistrian University of Athens,
  • Cyprus University of Technology,
  • Cyprus civil defense force.
  • As well as executives of the Emergency Services of the North Aegean Region, both at operation ( Center of Operations ) and local level(in the localities where events occur).

The Hellenic Rescue Team, Lesvos Branch, participated in the exercise with a total of 10 certified volunteer rescuers, where they were assigned various responsibilities. Cooperation was carried out with the Association of Volunteer Firefighters of Lesvos and the Association of Reserve Paratroopers of Mytilene. The above are certified volunteer groups included in the register of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection since 2001 under the instructions of the Mytilene Fire Service and the Civil Protection of the North Aegean Region.

The team was assigned to extinguish a fire in an assigned area in collaboration with the above using the specially designed vehicle for extinguishing we have, as well as providing first aid to the injured and transporting them to a place accessible by an ambulance in order to receive them. We thank everyone involved for the excellent cooperation and trust shown in us for so many years.
