4th Gera Cycling Marathon

On Sunday, April 10, 2022, the 4th Gera Cycling Marathon took place. The Hellenic Rescue Team of Lesvos Branch covered the event with a total of 13 volunteer rescuers, offering First Aid as a result of their knowledge and experiences to both participants and spectators.

After 2 years of stopping due to the pandemic (covid-19) the 4th Gera Cycling Marathon was organized by: the Mesagros cultural association “IRINI”, the Natural History Museum of Lesvos Petrified Forest, the Culture, Sports & Tourism Association of Lesvos Island and the Chamber of Lesvos.

Supported by: the Lesvos Cycling Association, the Hellenic Rescue Team (Lesvos Branch), the Hellenic Police, the Voluntary Fire Brigade of Gera. The technical support of the races was provided by “LESVOS RIDE“.

The route was 32 km, started from Mesagros square to Skopelos and went up to the plateau of Karyonas passing through Schistos Mountain, Kolimbatera and Toumba. Paths and forest and rural roads crossed the olive trees and the virgin pine forest to the top of the mountain just below the Petrenios pillar. At 16 km of the route, the view from up there to Gera bay as well as over the mountain of Amali to the Asian coast, as a reward for cyclists. From this point until the completion of the first 22 km of the route in Mesagros square was downhill with the athletes passing through the areas of Agriomelissa, Nitsa and Kaminia having the Paliokastro vigilant guard of the area on their left. The athletes crossed Plakados and Paleokipos before starting for their last uphill section to Aligaropi. The river with the gargling water accompanied the athletes’ effort and quenched their fatigue. Following the old path to Agathero, there was less than 5 km left for the finish line. The path of Kalykavaina on the east side of Paliokastro was the last technical obstacle for the completion of the route shortly before the participants’ arrival in Mesagros and their finish in the village square from where they started at 10 in the morning. Throughout the race, the instructions of the GGA health protocol were followed faithfully.

Here we would like to emphasize the special and original movement of solidarity and humanity of Athanasis Nikolaou company who donated as much rice as 50% of the ninth finisher’s weight of the race to the action of the Humanitarian and Social Welfare Department of the Lesvos branch”Komboi of Love” for families with living difficulties, for Easter. And the remaining 50% to the athlete who finished ninth in the overall standings.

Special thanks to the 9th finisher of the race Ignati Laskaridis – President of POSYLE who in turn donated 50% of his weight to the team to make it available to families with living difficulties. We thank the organizers and all the participants and volunteers for our excellent cooperation and the trust you always show in our face.
